Mid-level Fisheries Biologist

Stillwater Sciences seeks a highly-motivated, mid-level fisheries biologist to be based out of the Berkeley area to serve as a member of an interdisciplinary team working on fisheries, aquatic ecology, habitat restoration, and water resources projects throughout California and the Pacific Northwest. Individuals with significant experience or interest in fisheries management and river restoration in California are encouraged to apply.
The Fisheries Biologist will be responsible for:
- Developing and implementing fish population and aquatic habitat assessments
- Providing fisheries support for stream restoration planning and design
- Analyzing and synthesizing aquatic resource data
- Representing Stillwater in public forums on technical and resource management issues
- Proposal preparation, marketing, and project and client management
- Lead authorship on fisheries-related technical reports
- Preparing environmental compliance documents (e.g., CEQA/NEPA/ESA/FERC)
- Participating in interdisciplinary teams for watershed assessment, resource inventory, impact analysis, and natural resource management planning projects
- Overseeing field crew of various sizes (2 to 5 staff)
The ideal candidate will possess:
- MS in Fisheries Biology, Aquatic Ecology, or related field with 3–5+ years of experience; or BS with 5–7+ years of experience in the environmental field
- Expertise in research, monitoring, and management of California fish populations and habitats
- Experience with sampling techniques for and identification of anadromous and resident fishes common to the western U.S.
- Experience conducting fish habitat assessments
- Demonstrated excellence with verbal and written communications
- Permitting and regulatory compliance experience
- Willingness to periodically travel and work long hours in the field or office to meet project needs
- Proven ability to work well with collaborative project teams and diverse stakeholders
- Some experience with the following: geomorphic principles, hydrological measurements, stream channel and substrate assessment, instream flow studies, river restoration, water quality metrics and measurements, and/or CEQA/NEPA/ESA/FERC regulations
- Environmental consulting and project management experience preferred
- Valid Driver’s license in good standing
