Stillwater Sciences seeks a highly motivated person with environmental science and administrative assistance skills for a part-time position in our office in Portland, Oregon. This position will provide office operations and project support for riverine and wetland studies throughout the Pacific Northwest. The position is available starting in fall 2019. Applicants should be available to work 1–16 hours per week, with the possibility of increased hours during summer months. The successful applicant will gain experience in or exposure to many facets of an environmental consulting business, from administration and business development to data collection, analysis and reporting.

Desired Skills and Attributes:

  • Coursework completed towards a B.S. degree in aquatic, biological, ecological, physical and/or environmental sciences
  • Willingness to work or prior experience in both administrative and technical environments; office and field efforts
  • Highly developed organizational skills, attention to detail with the ability to multi-task
  • Willingness to be proactive, initiate assigned tasks, and seek clarification when the desired outcome is unclear
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to accommodate unpredictable schedule needs, including standard and non-standard work hours and variable workloads
  • Ability to work independently, be flexible, and enthusiastic about various tasks
  • Computer skills with word processing, spreadsheet, and database software
  • Experience or desire to work in an environmental discipline (e.g., native plant surveys, water quality sampling, GIS, fisheries and/or aquatic habitat assessment, hydrologic measurements, instream flow studies)
  • Experience with or desire to conduct fieldwork—working outdoors, understanding project requirements, and adhering to best practices in safety

Responsibilities include:

Administrative and marketing:

  • Responsible for general office, contract, project, and staff support
  • Administrative duties including but not limited to greeting visitors, answering phones, distributing mail, managing office accounts (e.g., parking, property management, professional memberships), running business-related errands, entering expense reports, ordering supplies, and organizing field equipment
  • Maintain common areas, office equipment, and computers
  • Data entry, filing, and report production including Microsoft office support
  • Coordinate company functions, project related travel, courier services and shipping
  • Prepare written marketing materials and write, format, and assemble proposal materials/statements of qualification
  • Research and track upcoming work opportunities, including grants
  • Update staff resumes and project descriptions, assist with social media communications, and facilitate inter-office communication and coordination

Technical/scientific:

  • Conduct literature and database searches
  • Proposal and report document formatting and assembly
  • Prepare report bibliographies
  • Participate in interdisciplinary field teams for watershed assessment, resource inventory, impact analysis, and natural resource management planning projects (e.g., logistics support, field technician support, data entry, and reporting)
  • Collection and analysis of field data related to aquatic ecology, fisheries biology, botany, water quality, hydrology, geomorphology, and restoration design
  • Data entry, data management, quality assurance, and data analysis
  • Occasional out-of-town (field) work, as needed
