Matt Drenner, PhD

Senior Fisheries Biologist

Matt Drenner is a Senior Fisheries Biologist in the Los Angeles office and is based in Ventura, California. His research experience includes examining: fish passage efficiency and the impact of hydropower operations on salmonid migration; environmental and physiological influences on behavior, life-history expression and survival of salmonids; bycatch mortality from commercial fisheries; predator-prey dynamics in aquatic systems; the effects of drought on aquatic communities; and mercury contamination of aquatic food webs. Matt has led research projects in both freshwater and marine environments using techniques such as telemetry, environmental monitoring, and molecular ecology to understand the mechanisms behind fish behavior and survival. Currently, Matt is working on projects related to stream restoration in Southern California, with focus on restoration of steelhead. He is also a Research Associate at the University of California Santa Barbara, where he is studying the effects of wildfire on coastal streams in Southern California
