Monitoring Pacific lamprey spawning populations
Stillwater Sciences’ in-house Pacific lamprey expert Abel Brumo recently published a chapter in the American Fisheries Society’s Biology, Management, and Conservation of Lampreys in North America. The chapter titled “Approaches for Monitoring Pacific Lamprey Spawning Populations in a Coastal Oregon Stream” relates the pros and cons of using different approaches to assess timing, duration, and magnitude of spawning. In addition to visual counts of spawning adults and their redds, Abel employed the novel technique of capturing recently hatched larval lamprey using drift nets. Abel’s additional lamprey research has involved early life survival, stock-recruitment, and the effectiveness of a lamprey-specific electrofisher under varying conditions.
Abel recently began a project with the Wiyot Tribe to educate tribal staff on lamprey biology and to review and synthesize available information on Pacific lamprey life history, distribution, and status in the Eel River Basin, Humboldt County, CA. The eventual goal of this project is to collaborate with tribal staff to monitor the lamprey population and to better understand the factors limiting their production in the basin.
